Root Canals

Endodontic treatment – commonly known as root canals - can take one, two, or three appointments, depending on the case. After a root canal appointment, you may experience any one of these symptoms:

It is difficult to predict which symptoms, if any, you may experience, and to what extent. In complicated cases, pain medicine may be necessary.

If you notice swelling, call our Fort Worth, Texas office at 817 737-2531. Dr. Pointer may prescribe an antibiotic.

To seal the tooth between visits, the doctor may place a temporary filling. This type of filling protects the root canal area until the final restoration - usually a crown - can be placed. The temporary filling is soft and can easily chip. If you believe the filling has been severely broken or lost, call the office.

Be extremely gentle on the tooth while eating until the final restoration is placed.

During endodontic treatment, the nerve, blood, and nutrient supply is removed from a tooth’s inner canal. This will cause the tooth to become very brittle and prone to fracturing, which can result in the need to extract the tooth. In many cases, a full crown (cap) may be needed to restore structural integrity.

If Dr. Pointer has recommended a crown, you will need the procedure promptly after your root canal. Until the crown is placed, be very careful with the tooth.
